PRACTICAL MANAGEMENT OF HAIR LOSS

        Hair Shaft Abnormalities

If a patient complains of hair breakage rather than the hair falling out at the roots, one may be dealing with a shaft problem. Microscopic examination of the actual shafts (hair mount) may be necessary to make the diagnosis. The most common cause of a hair shaft abnormality or hair fragility is trichorrhexis nodosa, with node-like swellings through which the shaft readily fractures. This usually appears as a result of trauma.
