PRACTICAL MANAGEMENT OF HAIR LOSS

        Trichotillomania

A compulsion to repetitively pull or pluck one’s hair is trichotillomania. It gives rise to an unnatural pattern of hair loss. Clinical diagnosis can sometimes be quite difficult and may require a scalp biopsy for diagnostic confirmation. Examination of the distal hair shaft for bizarre twisting and fracture will increase the physician’s index of suspicion. Fewer than 5% of such patients have deep-seated psychological disorders. Most cases resolve spontaneously. In severe cases, clomipramine may be prescribed.
